I stumbled across an interesting piece today from The Tennessee Center for Policy Research. From the article:

[Al] Gore’s mansion, located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).

The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh—more than 20 times the national average.

Gore’s extravagant energy use does not stop at his electric bill. Natural gas bills for Gore’s mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.

In total, Gore paid nearly $30,000 in combined electricity and natural gas bills for his Nashville estate in 2006.

At least the smelly hippies who are environmentalists actually live in the woods and eat berries. Their arguments and way of life are at least sequitur. These claims about Mr. Gore sound much worse than Pelosi's "10,000 pounds of carbon dioxide an hour" plane. She didn't request the plane; he owns the mansion and consumes the energy.

I'd be curious to see comparisons to houses the same size. That would say more than a comparison to the national average, as I'd guess his house is bigger than the average house.

The article's critique isn't that his mansion consumes more energy than the average mansion, but rather that he lives in a dwelling that consumes so much energy while preaching conservation and responsible energy usage. Even if he was consuming 1/2 the energy of comparable mansions, he still has a *mansion*, which certainly consumes more energy than a single family dwelling (where he could be living).

I wouldn't ask that he give up the mansion or that he stop evangelizing. I simply wish for him to act rationally and honestly. It isn't the energy usage or the preaching that I oppose, only his hypocrisy.

First-time commenter here. If we want to compare houses to houses, let's take the average bills and do a little math. If Gore is paying about 20 times what an "average home's" owner would pay, and an "average home" is about 2300 square feet, for him to be using an "average" amount of energy, his home would need to be about 46,000 square feet: a mansion, indeed.

Even the home of Bill Gates isn't 46,000 square feet.

My two cents.
